Before supermarkets. Before plastic wrap. Before everything was the same everywhere — there were crate labels.

This is an original California citrus crate label — a 1930s lithograph from the factory stock of the Strathmore Packing House, Strathmore, Tulare County, California. It has never been used. Never folded. Never attached to a crate. It is New Old Stock in excellent mint condition.

The label is richly detailed. A Scottish girl stands in traditional Highland dress — the tartan kilt, the plaid, the full regalia of the Highlands — with a castle by the water visible in the distance behind her. At her feet, thistles: the national emblem of Scotland since the reign of Alexander III in 1249, and a symbol chosen with clear intention by the Strathmore Packing House. The name Scotch Lassie Jean comes from a song of the same name written by Harry Miller in 1870 — a popular piece of Victorian Scottish nostalgia that was still being sung when this label was designed. The Strathmore Packing House, a California citrus company in Tulare County, built three of their labels around Scottish Highland imagery. This is the most detailed of the three.

Frame it as Scottish heritage decor, as tartan wall art, as Highland portraiture, or as the centerpiece of a collection featuring all three Strathmore Scottish labels. At 11.0 by 10.0 inches it is a large label that commands its frame — suits a standard 11x14 or 12x12 and works in any room that honors Scottish tradition. One available.

A wonderful gift for someone proud of Scottish ancestry, a Highland decor enthusiast, a vintage citrus label collector, a lover of Victorian Scottish folk tradition, or anyone who appreciates the beauty of tartan rendered in 1930s California lithography.

A note on crate label collecting: Original lithographic crate labels from this era are increasingly scarce. NOS examples like this one — never used, never folded, in original unused condition — represent the best of what survives. Collectors prize them for their graphic quality and the window they open onto a vanished chapter of American agricultural and commercial history.
